Re: Cyclers 1: The Interstellar Cycler
by J Totten on Tuesday December 24, @05:31PM
I have a bit of a thought, one might not need to launch every cycler directly. The first cycler (or first few) on a ring could probably slowly add on to themselves, from materials at each stop. After a long enough period of time has passed you could seperate it into two cyclers. One would continue essentially as the older one did, while the second would slow down a bit relative to the first. After you have a decent amount of seperation between them, the second could then accellerate back up to the original speed. Now you have two cyclers on the ring where you only had one before. You then repeat the procedure with each cycler. Before too long you have a large number of them on the ring. The idea is that you would only have to launch one or two cyclers to get started, and the rest could be built from material shipped up to them at lower per shipment energies. This could allow even small colonies that can only send small cargos to participate in the cycler contruction, instead of relying on only one point on the ring. The newer cyclers could even be less complex than the original, as it wouldn't need to have the equipment that the original cycler needed to have to get up to speed, only turning equipment, life support, and cargo handling equipment. Does this sound reasonable?

Brilliant! This solution falls right in line with the philosophy of the idea--of incremental growth and making interstellar travel possible even for the smallest colony. Its problems are the problems of the cycler concept in general (maintaining velocity and turning); I can't see that it introduces any new difficulties.

I may just want to use this idea if I do more Cycler Compact books...

Another idea I've had, is that new "split off" Cyclers could alter their course into different "rings" which would allow one cycler ring to open up other intersecting rings, opening up new space for seeding colonies and trade.
