Speaking of cover art, on May 6 artist George Krauter won the 2006 Analog Science Fiction and Fact's AnLab Award for his rendering of the Slipstream navy's Rook sailing past the city of Rush. I love this cover. It captures the steampunk sort of sensibility I tried to capture in the book--wooden ships, iron men, that sort of thing. One very smart move on George's part was to use some 3d software to visualize Rush, which meant that he can claim objective accuracy about the perspective and scale of the city--which otherwise could be rendered any number of different and convincing, but inaccurate ways. He's created an intriguing and colourful image, and it does exactly what it should do: elicit a sense of wonder in the viewer. Congratulations on the award, George, and I hope we get to work together on future projects! < | >
