Re: Free eBook Version of Ventus

Mr. Schroeder, I read about your release of this free version of your book Ventus over on the Whatever. I've got a question. I notice you've got the cover art included in the PDF version at least. Did you have to get permission from the artist to use the art in the digital version? I promise I'm neither a copyright lawyer looking for a client nor am I trying to start a copyright argument. I'm just curious about the mechanics of the creative commons movement as it relates to books.

As it happens, I created the cover art for this version myself (if you compare it with the Tor and Denoel editions, you'll see that their covers are quite different). This version was 90% done in Vue Infinite Version 6, with a little bit of photoshopery (is that a word?) for the text.

Your concerns about the rights of the cover artist are well placed. I would never use somebody else's work in such a way without permission.

Cool. Thanks for answering my question. I didn't think you'd have used cover art without permission. I was just curious how it would work if you HAD used someone else's art.

Skar - Just for arguments sake: If Karl wanted to use the Tor edition art he would have to negotiate those rights with the artist. Tor only owns rights for our editions. Since the artwork is already done and Karl is offering the book for free, the artist might have donated the usage for little or no fee. If the book was being sold, then some kind more equitable payment would be expected.
