New Scientist has a neat article about drinking beverages in freefall. A Canadian researcher has figured out a geometry for a container that you can sip in space the way you sip a cup of coffee on Earth. I'm calling it the helix glass, and will definitely use it as one of those little scenic details in The Sunless Countries. A helix glass uses surface tension to keep liquids in one piece; normally they break up into lots of little droplets that you have to chase around. I love the elegance of the idea; properly made by a good glassblower, they could also be quite beautiful, though they wouldn't look like any earthly container--more like glass corkscrews. < | Death by Spam >
