Actually, I take that last point back; if you look at these highly entertaining video clips of neural-net controllers racing cars, it's pretty clear that highly aggressive behaviour can appear spontaneously simply from the way a problem is framed. (In this case, if the cars are told to get around the track as fast as possible they'll get along okay, but if they're told to stay ahead of the other car, they start trying to run one another off the road.)

These video clips are so much fun they made my mirror neurons fire.
