New Scientist has a neat article about drinking beverages in freefall. A Canadian researcher has figured out a geometry for a container that you can sip in space the way you sip a cup of coffee on Earth. I'm calling it the helix glass, and will definitely use it as one of those little scenic details in The Sunless Countries. Read More...

Spam is killing me. I normally get about 200 spam emails a day, and just this morning I discovered that my ISP's spam filter went nuts some indeterminate time ago, and began randomly designating important emails as spam--meaning that I've lost a LOT of communications in recent months without knowing it. I'm continuing to keep tabs on the investigation of Robert Bussard's inertial electrostatic confinement fusion system. The latest news comes courtesy of Alan Boyle's Cosmic Log over at MSNBC: the WB7 device has been constructed, and they've started work. Read More...

As reported at the excellent astro site Centauri Dreams, a new paper suggests if that Jupiter's moon Europa does have a subsurface ocean, then that ocean is probably highly oxygenated--i.e., breathable by terrestrial fish. Read More...

SoS has made the Locus Bestsellers list. This is a list that tracks the SF/Fantasy marketplace in particular. The data are from August, less than a month after the book was released; and as far as I know, sales have remained pretty steady ever since. Read More...

Nice title, huh? The Canadian prairies are a pretty happenin' place these days; Janice just got back from a trip home to Regina, and there's a huge job and real estate boom happening there. What caught my attention this past week, though, was news of how the University of Saskatchewan's ribbon climber just missed bringing home the 2007 Space Elevator Games first prize. Read More...

Jim Hall over at Cult Pop interviewed me a couple of times last year, and the videos are now online. These are great interviews, not least because he's also spent time with Tobias Buckell, John Scalzi, Elizabeth Bear and put those interviews online as well. Thanks, Cult Pop! Read More...

It's no secret that Cory Doctorow and I are pals, so a review of Queen of Candesce in Boing Boing shouldn't be too surprising (though I didn't request it and Cory wouldn't post something like this if he didn't really like the book). What is noteworthy is the extraordinarily lucid description Cory gives of what this book is about; he should have written the jacket copy (not that I'm complaining about that). Read More...
I rant and rave in two locations aside from this one. First, I'm posting over at the Canada page
of WorldChanging.com. I'm doing advocacy and education
about the climate crisis and the rational, profitable and socially acceptable ways that we'll solve it. Not
because I'm an environmentalist per se, but as an outgrowth of my foresight studies work.
Secondly, I have a philosophical blog at
Age
of Embodiment. Age of Embodiment is a forum for commentary on what I
see as a massive cultural change that's sweeping towards us: the end of the Modern/Postmodern age,
and the beginning of a new era. This blog is all about what we'll see when we finally
finish healing the climate-change crisis, and raise our heads blinking to gaze on the new world.
