I've made my first novel, Ventus, available as a free download, as well as excerpts from two of the Virga books. I am looking forward to putting up a number of short stories in the near future.
To celebrate the August, 2007 publication of Queen of Candesce, I decided to re-release my first novel as an eBook. You can download it from this page. Ventus was first published by Tor Books in 2000, and and you can still buy it; to everyone who would just like to sample my work, I hope you enjoy this version.
I've released this book under a Creative Commons license, which means you can read it and distribute it freely, but not make derivative works or sell it.
I've made large tracts of these two Virga books available. If you want to find out what the Virga universe is all about, you can check it out here:
In spring 2005, the Directorate of Land Strategic Concepts of National Defense Canada (that is to say, the army) hired me to write a dramatized future military scenario. The book-length work, Crisis in Zefra, was set in a mythical African city-state, about 20 years in the future, and concerned a group of Canadian peacekeepers who are trying to ready the city for its first democratic vote while fighting an insurgency. The project ran to 27,000 words and was published by the army as a bound paperback book.
If you'd like to read Crisis in Zefra, you can download it in PDF form.
I'll be adding new stories here periodically. First of all, you can try my Aurora-award nominated short story "Hopscotch." The year this was nominated, another of my stories was also nominated: "The Toy Mill," which I wrote with David Nickle. "The Toy Mill" won the award; but I've always been fond of "Hopscotch." Here it is, in its entirety excerpted from my collection The Engine of Recall.
As part of the Chiarascuro Reading Series here in Toronto
Come on our Sunday evening, March 6th, to hear myself, Cory Doctorow, and David Nickle (whose latest novel, Eutopia--pictured at right, has just been released and is kicking critical ass)! Cory, David and I go back a long ways, and we've all read together many times. I don't know what the audience is going to be like, but on our side, expect lively fireworks and enthusiastic, dramatic readings from all three of us.
For more information, you can visit the Chiarascuro Reading Series website.
This Friday to Sunday, I'll be at Polaris 24 in Richmond Hill. Here's how to find me
This weekend is the annual media-oriented con in Toronto, Polaris. I'll be there, and you can catch me at panels, a reading, or a signing, at these times:
Hope to see you there!
Where I'll be and how I can help new and aspiring writers between February 1 and May 31, 2010
Toronto Public Library has put up its web page detailing my writer in residence tenure this spring. That means I can reveal the details here too; I'll give you some here, but I'll also be placing the events into my calendar, which you can access at any time through the "Events" menu item on the left of the site's window (or the "upcoming events" box on the right).
Submit your manuscript for an opportunity to have a one-on-one evaluation with me or attend the writer-in-residencereadings and workshops.
The complete, unabridged text is available for download from Audible.com, and soon on iTunes
You can listen to the complete text of the novel, read by Joyce Irvine. This is the first of three rapid-fire releases coming from MacMillan audio--the next two books in the series, Queen of Candesce and Pirate Sun, should be made available within the next few weeks.
To get it, bounce on over to the page at Audible.com. And enjoy!
I'll be at Worldcon in Denver. Drop in and see me!
Here's my schedule for the 66th World Science Fiction Convention, which happens August 6-10, in Denver Colorado. It's a pretty modest schedule, but when you realize that there's several hundred programming guests and only a limited set of slots--well, I don't know very many other midlist writers who have any more panels than this. In that sense, Worldcon is a victim of its own success; but I'm not complaining, because people will still be able to find me, and the Kaffeeklatsch and reading should be fun.
If you want to see me outside of this schedule, just email me and we can talk.
May 14, starting at 7:00 p.m., Julie Czerneda and will be reading from current/upcoming works
...So come on out! I'm going to be reading from Pirate Sun, which will be released from Tor Books in August. The location is the beautiful and historic Beaches Library branch of the Toronto Public Libraries.
(Sun of Suns and Queen of Candesce are combined in Cities of the Air)
